JASSO Scholarship (Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students)

Overview

A monthly stipend program run by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) supporting privately financed international students who are already enrolled or admitted at a participating Japanese school and who demonstrate financial need alongside strong academic standing.

Funding

Monthly stipend of approximately JPY 48,000 for university/graduate students, or JPY 30,000 for Japanese-language institute students

Eligibility

• Must be a privately financed (non-government-sponsored) international student enrolled at a JASSO-participating Japanese institution
• Must show financial difficulty combined with good academic performance and conduct
• Selection and nomination is handled by the host school - it is not applied for directly with JASSO
• Open to students at Japanese-language institutes as well as undergraduate and graduate programs

Application Deadline

How to Apply

1. Secure admission/enrollment at a JASSO-participating Japanese school first
2. Contact the school's international student office to request the JASSO scholarship application form
3. Submit required documents such as transcripts, an enrollment certificate, and a statement of financial need
4. Be assessed and nominated by the host institution's selection committee
5. If nominated, receive the monthly stipend through the school for the approved period
