Overview

The MEXT Scholarship, run by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, funds international students across seven tracks including research students, undergraduates, teacher trainees and the Young Leaders Program. Recipients get full tuition waivers, a monthly stipend and round-trip airfare, applying either through a Japanese embassy in their home country or via direct university nomination.

Application Deadline

Embassy-track applications typically open around April-May and close between May and June each year (each Japanese embassy/consulate sets its own exact date); university-recommended track deadlines vary by institution. How to Apply

  1. Confirm the application route - Embassy Recommendation, University Recommendation, or Japanese Studies Student - via your local Japanese embassy or target university
  2. Obtain and complete the application form from the embassy/consulate or university's international office
  3. Submit transcripts, a research/study plan, health certificate, and letters of recommendation
  4. Sit the embassy's written exam and/or interview if applying via Embassy Recommendation
  5. If selected, complete follow-up placement procedures with a Japanese university and MEXT
