Australia’s Subclass 500 student visa is well-defined, but small mistakes in the Genuine Student requirement or financial evidence cause avoidable refusals. Here’s the checklist.
1. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
You need a CoE from a registered Australian institution before you can apply — no CoE, no visa application.
2. Genuine Student (GS) requirement
This replaced the old GTE requirement. You’ll need a written statement explaining your study plans, why Australia, and your intentions after graduation — be specific and consistent with your academic background.
3. Financial capacity
Proof you can cover tuition, living costs (currently well above AUD 24,000/year), and travel — through savings, an education loan, or a scholarship letter.
4. English proficiency
IELTS, PTE, or equivalent, meeting your course’s minimum requirement.
5. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Mandatory for the full length of your visa — arrange this before you apply.
